Raving about Reuben

Shop on Carroll has many incredible volunteers who make the store come alive each day, including Reuben Toa.

After being a loyal customer for years, Shop on Carroll Manager Fiona Dodds stopped Reuben for a chat one day when he was in the shop. The conversation left Reuben wondering how to get more involved.

He sent Fiona an email and, as he said, “the rest is history.” Reuben has been volunteering at Shop on Carroll every Tuesday for over a year now.

“I didn’t know what I was getting in to. The first time I came in, everyone was really friendly and welcoming. The shop is unique. I love the range of people I met here, people with different lives and experiences, and the knowledge they all bring adds to the shop.”

“You never know what you may find when you come to Shop on Carroll. I once found a pair of Saville Row trousers that fit me perfectly.”

Reuben helps out with all aspects at Shop on Carroll, from being behind the counter to modelling for store publicity; including one memorable event. “One morning I was modelling for our wedding section, and got ‘married’ to 5 different brides in just a few hours.”

Apparently, he also ‘climbs a lot of ladders.’

Erin and Margie work alongside Reuben, and had nothing but positives to share about working with him.

“Reuben is a very talented multi-tasker; whatever needs to be done we know that Reuben can do. It’s very nice to have a man around, showing that volunteering here isn’t just for women.”

Margie nodded firmly. “He has style, he has a flair.”

While Reuben blushed humbly in the background, Erin expanded that “Reuben has confidence with retro fashion. I think it helps customers feel confident in their own styles.”

Presbyterian Support Otago  offers shop volunteers the opportunity to complete a NZQA accredited Retail Course. Reuben is currently completing the course, with support from Shop on Carroll.

When asked to say something to those thinking about volunteering, Reuben said with certainty, “Definitely become a volunteer. There is such a range of opportunities, and there is something for everybody. Volunteering can allow you to evolve and explore interests that you never knew you could be into.”

We always need more volunteers in the Presbyterian Support Otago charity shops. Contact Michelle on 03 477 7115 to find out more about becoming a volunteer.
