Reading books for Buddies

Presbyterian Support Otago has recently enjoyed a pleasant surprise in the guise of an unexpected donation to our Buddy Programme. The charitable benefactors were John McGlashan College students, a school who values the Presbyterian ethos.

John McGlashan College held a fundraising event where students between Years 7 and 10 received sponsorship in return for dedicating as many hours as possible to reading books.

The theme “Buddy up with a Book” provided inspiration for the students. Not to be outdone, one diligent Year 7 reader clocked up to 27 hours of reading.

After the passing of two weeks and page-turning of 350 bookworms, the initiative raised $3,000. Half of this was gifted to our Buddy Programme and the other half has been used to allow students to purchase new books for the school library.

Marco Kleinlangevelsloo, Buddy Programme Coordinator, met the top fundraisers at a recent John McGlashan assembly and received the donation cheque presented by TIC Junior English Jo Mullenger.

“We really appreciate this donation from the John McGlashan students. It’s incredibly encouraging to see students choosing to do something in support of a programme that helps other young people in the city.”

The funds will go toward a van that the Buddy group is currently fundraising to purchase. Many thanks to the students of John McGlashan College for you generous surprise donation.
