Ray lives in St Clair with his wife Karen. They have two grown and married children, a son living in Wellington and a daughter living in Dublin, Ireland.

Ray began his career in civil engineering, working in design and construction in the electrical supply industry, before swapping to the private sector to work in engineering consulting. He was employed for 13 years by the Otago Hospital Board, working on the new Ward Block, before retraining in economics. He was the Board Secretary for Works; overseeing capital and technology purchases, assisting with the amalgamation of several hospital boards, and managing the board’s property assets.

Ray has always maintained his interest in health matters and was instrumental in establishing the new Oamaru Hospital for the Waitaki District Council, completing the funding and business planning tasks.

Ray was appointed to the Board as an independent director in October 2002 and served on the Corporate and Finance Committee. He is the current Chairman of Corporate and Finance and sits on the Audit Committee, as well as serving as Director of Presbyterian Retirement Villages Limited.

Ray and Karen like to travel and are fortunate to have been able to do this on a regular basis. They also enjoy their summers at Lake Hawea where they have had a home for many years.  Ray likes to hunt and fish and also has a soft spot for art and early New Zealand and especially Otago history and poetry.

He is extremely proud of PSO, its history of achievements for the community and the culture of the staff.
