No matter what your skills or talents, we are bound to have an interesting role to fit. Whether you only have a few hours to give, or can assist on a more regular basis, there’s something you can do to lend a hand in your community. 

Currently in Dunedin and across Otago, there are opportunities to volunteer in the following programmes:

  • Buddy Programme – become an adult buddy and mentor a child aged between 4 and 12. Adult mentors enrich children's lives with shared time, friendship and encouragement. 2 hours per week, 12 month commitment, throughout Otago. 
    Requirements are aged 20 years and over. 

  • Shop on Charity Shops and Warehouse - enjoy interactions with customers, staff and volunteers while working in the retail shop or warehouse. Price goods, sell, manage and sort incoming donations. Dunedin only, Monday - Sunday. This role requires a minimum 6 month commitment or longer. 

  • Club Enliven - help older people to take part in a range of activities to help them stay connected and active. or driving client to and from Club Enliven so they can participate in the programme - own or provided vehicle. Dunedin Tuesday, Wednesday and Fridays, Alexandra Thursdays, Mosgiel opening mid 2021. This role requires a minimum 6 month commitment or longer.   • Stepping Stones – work with adults who need extra support to get back into employment. Assist with activities, like sewing, woodwork and cooking, give a talk, entertain or train the participants. South Dunedin, Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays. 

  • Visiting Volunteers in the community - help an elderly person stay connected. Provide regular, ongoing contact and good company for older people living alone in their own home. Throughout the Dunedin area. This role requires a minimum 6 month commitment or longer.
     
  • Residential Aged Care Homes - Visit with elderly residents enabling them the opportunity to live active and social lives. Spend time on shared interests, helping residents take part in activities, develop new friendships and explore new experiences. This role requires a minimum 6 month commitment or longer. Throughout Otago

Retail Volunteers - Dunedin

Are you passionate about shopping? Do you enjoy helping people find 'just what they're looking for'? Then this might be the role for you! We need retail assistants to work at one of our busy retail stores - Shop on Carroll or Op Shop on St Andrew.

Various shifts available Monday - Saturday. This role requires a minimum 6 month commitment or longer.

You need to be enthusiastic, hard-working, a great communicator, and a team player.
You'll receive full training and will always be working with another person.
You'll be pricing goods, helping with displays, stocking shelves, serving customers, and keeping the shop clean and tidy. 

Profits from Shop On sales go back into the Otago community, helping to support the various Family Works services and programmes we offer. PSO does not offer a staff or volunteer discount, as prices are already low. Before staff and volunteers have the opportunity to make a purchase, items must be sorted, priced and have been on the shop floor for a set amount of time prior to purchase. A record of staff and volunteer purchases must be kept in each shop.

Ross Home - North East Valley, Dunedin

We are looking for volunteers to help out for a few hours in the afternoons, you could be spending time walking a resident around the gardens and local area, chatting to less mobile residents during activities or spending time visiting residents in the dementia unit. 
Shifts available;
1:30pm Tuesdays - walking.
2:00pm Wednesday, Thursday or Friday. 
This role requires a minimum 6 month commitment or longer.

Buddy Programme - all Otago

We're looking for responsible adults who want to contribute positively to the life of a child. You'll spend time with a child who needs extra support from a reliable and consistent adult mentor, taking part in low- or no-cost activities, encouraging positive interests, attitudes, values, and behaviour.

You'll be matched with a child with similar to interests to yours, and you'll meet at a time which suits you both. There is extensive training, plus ongoing training and support, as well as the opportunity to take part in group activities with other Buddy pairs. Volunteers need to be at least 20 years of age and need to be able to spend 2 hours per week with their young buddy for at least 12months from the time you are matched.

Drivers - Club Enliven - Dunedin and soon to be Mosgiel

Do you have a car, driver licence, and a little time to spare?  You might like to help our Club Enliven members get to and from Club activities held at 407 Moray Place, Dunedin. 

Social engagement and meaningful activity are essential to a healthy, happy life, no matter what your age.  Club Enliven is for people over 65 years and offers a range of social activities including discussions, presentations from guest speakers, singing and music, craft, outings, cooking and meals.  Many of our members are no longer able to drive and rely on volunteer drivers to assist them in getting to and from Club Enliven. 

Driving Volunteers are needed between 9-10am and 3-4pm on Tuesday, Wednesdays, and Fridays. 
Kitchen and Activities assistants are needed between 10am and 3pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. This role requires a minimum 6 month commitment or longer.

Care Home Volunteer - St Andrews, 8 Easther Crescent, Kew, Dunedin

Urgently looking for a Piano Player and Van driver

St Andrews offers hospital and rest home dementia care. Volunteers visit elderly people at St Andrews, to spend time with them, have a chat, help with a small project (e.g. sorting photos), go for a walk with them or whatever you choose. It really makes a difference to the people we work with, helping them stay connected and keeping them active. We are always recruiting volunteers for variety of roles. From playing the piano to driving the van for residents outings. Gardening to writing letters, singing to sorting photos and everything in between.
