Faye Bent is an independent, vivacious 85-year-old and her sense of humour is complemented with a hearty laugh and twinkling eyes!
Not long ago Faye moved into one of Iona’s cottages and has established herself as the resident gardener. Not one to sit around, Faye loves nothing better than to head outside and into her garden full of colourful blooms, including some pretty pansies!
It’s not just her own garden that Faye cares for. She’s often seen tending Iona’s common gardens for all the residents to enjoy and she’s a dab hand at painting outdoor furniture and pots!
Faye’s gardening enthusiasm has started a trend. Other residents, seeing what she’s accomplished, have decided they too need to exercise their green thumbs. And the result? Some beautiful gardens around Iona.
She’s fiercely independent and will take her car out to go to the swimming pool or head into town.
Faye grew up in Southland, married and had five children – Michelle, Karen, Bev, Debbie and David. Following her first marriage, Faye met current husband, Norman, who comes from Oamaru. And how did they meet?
“My sister was married to one of Norman’s brothers and that’s how we met. We’ve been married for 30 years. Norman has two children from his first marriage and one of my daughters works here at Iona.”
Ninety-year-old Norman has lived at Iona for four years while Faye continued to live in their home until six months ago. Faye visits Norman every day but his health has deteriorated quite a lot.
“Norman is waiting for God, but he’s been a bit naughty in the past so God is making him wait a bit longer!”
As well as being a keen gardener, Faye also gets involved with other Iona activities including the “Knitters and Natters” group and enjoys having lunch with other Iona residents.
When asked what’s special about Iona, Faye talks fondly about the staff saying, “they’re very good to me and Norman. They’re cheery and bright.” And, of course, her daughter, Bev, isn’t far away either!
