What would you do?

Drive the Holmdene van, taking residents on outings around the Balclutha area. Residents like to have a coffee and cake somewhere along the way or park somewhere with a good view and have social chat.

  • Ensure that residents are safely transferred into and from the van during the trip.
  • Engage with residents in a friendly manner during the outing.
  • Provide companionship during the outing/activity to enhance their experience.
  • First aid training provided. Activities staff will accompany you and the residents.
  • Give your time weekly.

No two days are the same, time flies during the outing and it's a wonderfully rewarding experience. Beware, you might experience a 'helper's high' as volunteering can lead to a rush of euphoria and the release of endorphins!

An integral part of the Balclutha community, Holmdene is renowned for its quality care, wonderful food, and dedicated staff. Holmdene offers rest home and hospital level care for up to 35 residents.

Requirements | Checks you can expect

  • Full clean and current drivers license.
  • Able to drive a manual van provided by Holmdene.
  • Complete the Holmdene safe driving assessment.
  • Reliable and dedicated, residents cannot go on an outing without the support of a volunteer driver.

You must be friendly, reliable, trustworthy and have good communication skills.

Volunteers need to be physically capable of pushing wheelchairs and assisting with moving furniture like chairs so residents can access and participate in activities.

Volunteers should have a natural interest in older people, have patience, a caring and respectful attitude and be happy working as part of a team.

As you will be driving to and from the 'Home' of elderly people we take great care in who our volunteers are. All of our volunteers need to complete a Police Check and provide references. All volunteers will receive appropriate training and supervision for their role and will be required to sign a Code of Conduct.
