Piano players, Dunedin

What: Provide musical entertainment, playing piano for resident living in aged care homes.  
When: Flexible, 30 minutes to 1.5 hours. Daily, weekly or fortnightly on a day that suits you.  
Where: Ross Home, 360 North Road, North Dunedin.

Music plays a fundamental role in our identity, culture and heritage and can evoke powerful memories and emotions. Music also plays an important role in the care of older people, it can help seniors and people living with dementia express their feelings, communicate with others, and prompt memories through listening. 

What would you do? 

  • Play for an hour or so in one lounge area or 4 - 6 songs in each lounge.
  • Happy to accommodate you on any day of the week.
  • Chose your own music or take requests from residents.
  • Staff are always present.
  • Be passionate about music and the benefits it has on the health of older people.
  • Comfortable playing piano to a group of people. 

Requirements

You must be friendly, reliable, trustworthy and have good communication skills. 

Volunteers should have a natural interest in older people, have patience, a caring and respectful attitude and be happy working as part of a team.

As you will be stepping into the 'Home' of elderly people we take great care in who our volunteers are. All of our volunteers need to complete a Police Check and provide references. All volunteers will receive appropriate training and supervision for their role and will be required to sign a Code of Conduct.

Time commitment

1 - 2 hours weekly or fortnightly depending on the day and your availability. Monday through Sunday, so any afternoon between 2.00 - 4.30pm that suited you. The home has four spacious lounge areas with pianos, meaning there are plenty of lovely spaces for music to be enjoyed in.
