Retail Shop Assistant - Dunedin

What: Retail Assistants interact with and serve customers.
When: 2 hours a week, weekly, fortnight or month.
Where: Shop On Carroll, 169 Princes Street, Dunedin Central.

What would you do?

Interact with customers, staff and volunteers while working in our new location at 169 Princess street, between the Exchange and Dowling Street. If you are enthusiastic, creative and love helping people find what they're looking for then we'd love to hear from you. This is a dynamic working environment where no two days are the same:

  • Helping with window and in shop displays.
  • Interacting with customers.
  • Have an interest in people.
  • Have an interest in reducing waste or repurposing items.
  • Ability to make conversation and chit chat.
  • Getting creative with shop themes like ANZAC, vintage month.
  • Volunteer in an area of interest e.g. books, bridal, vintage or haberdashery.
  • Stocking shelves.
  • Serving customers.
  • Team player.
  • Keeping the shop clean and tidy.

Are your crafty? Can you knit, sew, repair, or create?

We are looking for volunteers to work, as part of a group, within the shop to help reduce waste by repairing or repurposing items that would otherwise end up in the landfill. This may involve sharing with, and teaching, others how to repair, upcycle/repurpose and create.

Profits from Shop On sales go back into the Otago community, helping to support the various Family Works services and programmes we offer. For this reason, we do not offer staff or volunteer discounts. Sale items are placed out in the shop for customers to purchase for a set amount of time before staff and volunteers have the opportunity to make a purchase.

Our shop is a vital piece of the financial sustainability puzzle for PSO as a charity, as well as knitting our local Dunedin community together, and keeping gently used clothing and retro gems out of landfill.

We hope volunteers will enjoy the role and gain experience working in a team, developing social skills, retail experience, and satisfaction contributing to the community and Presbyterian Support Otago.

Every volunteer shift makes a big difference to the smooth running and success of the Op Shops.

Requirements

You should be friendly, reliable, trustworthy and have good communication skills.

The role involves standing, so volunteers should be happy on their feet and physically capable of walking and bending. A good sense of humor is also required.

As you will be working in a retail environment and handling cash and payments, volunteers need to complete a Police Check and provide references. All volunteers will receive appropriate training and supervision for their role and will be required to sign a Code of Conduct.

Time commitment

Flexible. 2 hours a day, week, fortnight depending on your availability. Shops are open Monday - Saturday.

Join the Saturday roster, one or two Saturdays a month, or one morning or afternoon a week.

Crafty volunteers required Monday to Fridays.

Ideally you can commit to 6 months or longer.
